Frequently asked questions

How do I fix subtitles that are out of sync?

If they are early or late by the same amount, type the difference in "Move everything by". If they drift more and more, open "Fix subtitles that drift out of sync" and type when the first and the last subtitle should start: everything in between is adjusted.

Why are my subtitles slower or faster than the video?

They were made for a different frame rate, for example 25 fps instead of 23.976 fps. Choose both frame rates in "Change frame rate" to fix it.

What do overlap and reading speed mean?

An overlap is a subtitle that is still showing when the next one starts. Reading speed is how many characters per second people must read: above about 21 it gets hard. The tool fixes overlaps and points out subtitles that are too fast.

Can I remove [MUSIC] and other notes for the hard of hearing?

Yes. Tick "Remove hearing-impaired notes" to remove text in brackets and parentheses, and optionally speaker names like "JOHN:" and song lyrics.

How are long lines fixed?

Lines longer than the limit you choose (42 characters is the usual standard) are re-wrapped into at most two even lines, the way TV subtitles are.

Are my subtitles uploaded?

No. Everything happens in your browser, and you can save the result as SRT or VTT.
