Frequently asked questions

Which UUID version should I use?

Version 4 is random and fine for most uses. Version 7 starts with the time, so new IDs sort in order, which keeps database indexes fast.

Can I generate many UUIDs at once?

Yes, up to 10,000, one per line or as a JSON array, comma-separated or ready for SQL.

What are version 5 and version 3?

They always give the same UUID for the same name and namespace, for example a domain name. Version 5 uses SHA-1, version 3 uses MD5.

Can I check a UUID?

Yes. Paste it into Check a UUID to see its version, and when it was made for versions 1, 6 and 7.

Are they really unique?

Version 4 and 7 UUIDs use the browser's secure random generator. The chance of two ever being the same is too small to matter.

Is anything sent to a server?

No. UUIDs are made in your browser, so nothing is sent or stored.
