Frequently asked questions

How strong should my password be?

Aim for Very strong: about 80 bits or more. A 16-character password with all kinds of characters, or a passphrase of 6 words, is far beyond what attackers can guess.

What is a passphrase?

A few random words, like correct-horse-battery-staple. It is easier to remember and type than random characters, and just as strong when long enough.

Are the passwords really random?

Yes. They come from your browser's secure random generator, and every character is exactly as likely as any other.

Can I avoid characters that look alike?

Yes. Tick Avoid look-alikes to leave out I, l, 1, O and 0, or list any characters a website doesn't accept.

What does the time to guess mean?

How long an attacker would need on average with 10 billion guesses a second, a fast attack on a leaked password database.

Do you see or store my passwords?

No. Passwords are made on your device and never sent or saved. Only your settings are remembered, on this device.
